Who am I?

Hej! I'm Wallabie and I'm an American who's been living in Gothenburg, Sweden for the past couple of years. With over a decade in the tech industry across roles like Product Management, Software Engineering, and my current role as a Technical Lead, I’ve had the insider experience in both Silicon Valley and the Swedish tech scene.

I never thought I'd ever live abroad but you never know where life takes you. Along the way, I’ve had to figure out everything myself: from understanding how to get a work permit to successfully applying for Expert Tax relief after my own company’s lawyers told me I didn’t qualify. And of course, filing taxes in both Sweden and in the US since, as a US citizen, the IRS is after your wherever you live.

My name isn't actually Wallabie, and due to Swedish sunshine laws, you can figure out who I am pretty easily. That said, I'd like to write candidly about personal experiences and financial matters without this content being immediately being attached to me.

What's The Quip?

I started The Quip to be the resource I wish I had when was relocating and settling into Sweden. This isn't a lifestyle blog; it’s a tactical guide for tech workers who want to move to Sweden while maximize their wealth and well-being. If you're an American, hopefully you'll find this place especially useful.

The Quip covers topics such as:

• Relocation: How to move and settle into Swedish society
• Job hunting: How to find a job in the tech industry in Sweden
• Career management: How to get the most personal growth and compensation from your work
• Taxes: How to deal with both the IRS and Skatteverket, especially if you have assets outside of Sweden.
• Finances: How to get a bank account, loan, negotiate a salary, buy an apartment

The Quip aims to:

• Get to the point: you don't have all day to read thousand-word-long articles
• Be grounded in experience: I'm only going to write about what I've actually gone through
• Make it simple: moving and living in a foreign country isn't easy. Hopefully The Quip makes it a tad easier.
