Ask Migrationsverket: Can you start a business while on a work permit?

The Quip: Yes, or The Quip wouldn't exist!

I'm living in Sweden on a work permit as an employee (not self employed). I wanted to start a business (this!). Could I?

The current Migrationsverket website didn't give me any answers. But I remembered reading something on it before it got redesigned in 2025. The old website used to have an FAQ page. Luckily, the relevant page was indexed on the Way Back Machine:

From the old website

Just to be 100% sure, I asked Migrationsverket myself:

I am currently on my first two years of my "Residence and work permit" as an employee of [redacted] AB.

The Migrationsverket website previously (before the redesign) had a "Frequently Asked Questions about Work Permits" page that stated the following:

Can I run my own business when I have a work permit?
If you have a residence and work permit for work in Sweden, you can run your own company alongside your employment. Your employment must be the main purpose of your stay in Sweden and the conditions for your work permit must be fulfilled. The income from the company will not be taken into account in assessing whether the conditions for the work permit have been met.

I want to confirm:
1. I am allowed to operate and perform work for my own business (a 100% owned by me AB) as long as I maintain my employment and obligations with [redacted] AB and continue to meet the requirements of my permit (maintence requirements, insurance, etc)
2. This should have no impact on future work permit extensions or permanent residency.

Their reply:

The information you found on our old website is still valid.
1- Yes.
2- If the requirements for the granted permit continue to be met.
